Sacred Games Season 2 Review
Sacred Games’ first season left a dangling mound of questions. Non-linearly oriented – switching between the two leads, Mumbai don Ganesh Gaitonde (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) and cop Sartaj Singh (Saif Ali Khan) – it made us think what was next. The foreshadowing and hints were clever, scattered all over the season.
It gave us prominent characters-like Guruji (Pankaj Tripathi), Trivedi (Chittaranjan Tripathy), JoJo (Surveen Chawla)-but withheld crucial information about them, inviting us to connect the dots.
Season 2 picks up and helps to tie some loose ends. It opens in 1994 when Gaitonde has locked up on a boat off Mumbai in a sea away. The other side includes Sartaj, who has 25 days to break the mystery-one that will wipe out Mumbai if it is not solved. Season 2, under the direction of Anurag Kashyap and Neeraj Ghaywan, differs markedly from its prequel.
In season two, Gaitonde’s story continues with flashbacks, which again affects things in the present for Sartaj. Sartaj finally uncovers the presence of an ashram that his father had once been part of, and learns about, his dystopian ambitions to establish a new world free of peace and war. Gaitonde’s meeting with Guruji is shown in flashback, along with how he became part of the ashram and his activities with them.
Also discussed is how Gaitonde was deployed at the same time by RAW officer Yadav, who is trying to keep Gaitonde’s competitor and archenemy Suleiman Isa alive – much to the dismay of the latter – so that she can finally catch and kill the dangerous extremist Shahid Khan, who also turns out to be Sartaj ‘s cousin and harbors plans to wipe out India.
To continue with, the pace, the wicked satire, and the sincere connections that made the first season so captivating are seriously lacking. There the bulk of issues are seen from a distance (figurative). The story, as before, is closely injured, which needs careful attention, but behind the lines there is so little going that you wonder what happened. Or the designers lost faith in this? Or they lost their thematic material to mine? The second season feels so disconnected from its core that it fails to inspire excitement on the intellect.
On a narrative point, however, there is plenty to unpack here. It tracks 23 years of Gaitonde’s life – from 1994 to 2017, where he eventually encounters Guruji, learns Trivedi, deflects the demands of RAW agent Yadav Señora (Amruta Subhash) – and Sartaj proceeds to uncover the various hints, inching closer to cracking the mystery. But the main problem with this season is that it suffers from a was-there-seen-that condition which weakens.
Unlike the first season, where the novel assumes religious fundamentalism and daily bigotry, Season 2 does not provide us with different ways of thinking about the same content. Sacred Games Season 2 will create more interest over the weekend as the series gets more steam. Within a few hours of its broadcast, the show has already begun to show trends in social media.
