Abhinav Bindra Birth and Early Life

Abhinav Bindra was born in an affluent Punjabi Sikh family. He loved shooting since childhood, so his parents arranged a shooting range in his house in Patiala [Punjab] and thus began Abhinav’s journey to becoming a shooter.

He represented India in the 1998 Commonwealth Games. At that time he was only 15 years old and at the same time, he was also the youngest participant in this sports competition. When Abhinav got the bronze medal in the Munich World Cup in 2001 and made a new junior world record 597/600, people’s attention came to him. After that, he never looked back and after that, he went on to win medals and awards one after the other. He also won the ‘World Shooting Championship’. This success of his increased and inspired the curiosity towards shooting in the people of India, due to which many people have also chosen it as their career.

  • In 1998, Abhinav Bindra participated in the Commonwealth Games held in Kuala Lumpur, when he was only 15 years old and he was the youngest participant.
  • In the 2000 Sydney Olympics, he was a part of the Indian Contingent. But here his performance was disappointing.
  • In 2001, he improved his previous performance in the Munich World Cup and here he got the bronze medal and here he set a new junior record of 597/600 . He made India proud by winning a total of 6 gold medals in various international competitions held in 2001 .
  • In the Commonwealth Games held in Manchester in 2002, Abhinav won the Gold Medal in the 10m Air Rifle Pairs event and the Silver Medal in the 10m Air Rifle Singles event.
  • He did not perform well in the 2004 Athens Olympics and finished last among 8 contestants in the final.
  • In 2006, he created history by winning the Gold Medal at the 2006 ISSF World Shooting Championships held in Zagreb, Croatia. Abhinav Bindra is the first Indian shooter to get this position. Abhinav won the Gold Medal in the 10m Air Rifle Pairs event and the Silver Medal in the 10m Air Rifle Singles event at the Commonwealth Games held in Melbourne in the same year.
  • The most important moment in Abhinav Bindra’s career was when he won the gold medal in the Men’s 10m Air Rifle event at the 2008 Olympics held in Beijing. This gold medal of Abhinav was brought to India after 28 years by winning any of the Olympic gold medals . Earlier in 1980, the men’s field hockey team won the gold medal in the Moscow Olympics.
  • In 2010, in the Commonwealth Games held in Delhi, India, he won the Gold Medal in the 10m Air Rifle [pairs] event and the Silver Medal once again in the 10m Air Rifle Singles event in partnership with Gagan Narang. 
  • Abhinav could not qualify in the 2012 London Olympics, but in 2014, he once again performed his best in the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and won the gold medal in the 10m air rifle event.
  • In the 2016 Rio Olympics, he has secured fourth place in the Men’s 10m Air Rifle event.

Abhinav Bindra professional career (Business Career )

Abhinav Bindra holds a BBA degree from the University of Colorado. He is the CEO of Abhinav Futuristics, the only distributor of Walther Arms in India. Abhinav has sponsorship tie-ups with Samsung, BSNL, and Sahara Group. He is also the brand ambassador of the state-run Steel Authority of India Limited and a member of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry [FICCI] Sports Committee since 2010.

Abhinav Bindra Personal Life

In 2011, Abhinav Bindra’s autobiography [Autobiography] – “ A Shot At History: My Obsessive Journey to Olympic Gold  was published by HarperSports, Abhinav co-authored it with sportswriter Rohit Brijnath. Which was released on 27 October 2011 at a function organized by Union Sports Minister Shri Ajay Maken in Delhi. This book of Abhinav got very good reviews.
